Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive director announces new studio
Veteran developer Tomonobu Itagaki has announced a new game studio called Itagaki Games. The announcement was made via a post on his personal Facebook account. The director produced a total of ten games over a period of eight years when working at Tecmo. Itagaki and developer Tecmo had some creative differences in June 2008, which led to Itagaki founding an independent studio called Valhalla Game Studios. Under this banner he created three games: Devil’s Third, Devil’s Third Online and Momotaro Dentetsu.
When Itagaki was asked whether he would consider working with his old partner Xbox again, with whom he worked for on the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises, he said that he would be honored to:
“20 years have passed since then, and I established my own company, Itagaki Games, which is not Tecmo, nor Valhalla. I know Microsoft is still aggressive. If they reach out to me, it will be an honor for me.”
During the Tokyo Games Show last year, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that he intends to do a “much better job” with this generation’s Xbox in Japan. The gaming console has had problematic sales in that country, being trumped by local competitors Nintendo and Sony on every turn. Maybe Itagaki Games can help him with that.
